History and Growth

History

In 1984, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists recognized the need to turn financial contributions from individuals and organizations into educational opportunities for radiologic technologists and created the ASRT Educational Foundation.

In 1996, the Board of Trustees identified a key element missing from the Foundation’s name. Although the Foundation provided many opportunities for technologists to continue their education, it also assisted with research in the profession. It was at this point that the Foundation’s name changed to the ASRT Education and Research Foundation to better reflect its mission and commitment to fund research projects important to the profession’s future.

Major Accomplishments

Over the years the Foundation has provided many different radiologic science grant programs and competitions and continues to evolve program offerings as needs in the field shift. In total, more than $1.5 million in award funding has been disbursed.

The Foundation’s current and past programs include:

  • Research grants
  • Grants for institutions to launch new radiologic science programs
  • A scientific poster display competition
  • A writing competition
