Professional Research Grant Program

We are committed to supporting the research and analysis of issues that affect the radiologic sciences. The professional research grant program assists radiologic technologists and radiation therapists with an award of up to $10,000 to conduct a research project in affiliation with an academic or clinical institution.

Important Dates

Proposals are considered twice yearly. To have your proposal reviewed, submit a completed application by March 1 for the spring round and August 1 for the fall round. Applicants are notified of funding decisions by June 1 for the spring round or December 1 for the fall round. Note: It is strongly recommended that you submit a letter of intent no later than one month prior to the proposal deadline.

Eligibility Requirements

Applications must be submitted by an ASRT member who is also registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (or equivalent) or an ASRT member who holds an unrestricted state license.

Proposed research projects must be for a period not to exceed two years. Acceptable areas of research include radiation therapy, dosimetry, medical imaging, and radiologic science education and administration. View our Research Agenda for a list of suggested research issues.

Previous grant recipients are eligible to apply. ASRT Foundation Board of Trustees, staff and their immediate family members are ineligible.

Grantee Requirements

If your research proposal is awarded a grant, a grant award package will be sent to you via e-mail. The award package contains important information regarding your award disbursement. You also will receive grant agreement and release forms to be signed and returned to the Foundation.

All grant recipients must agree to:
  • Allow the ASRT and ASRT Foundation to make information about the project proposal (including name of researchers and affiliated institutions) publicly available.
  • Submit a progress report
  • Complete the final report form
  • Submit the final manuscript to the Radiologic Technology or Radiation Therapist journal

Application and Guidelines

Complete the Grant Application and submit the full proposal via e-mail to the ASRT Foundation. Refer to our FAQs for instructions on using a digital signature in your application. Proposals also may be submitted by mail.

Refer to the Professional Research Grant Guidelines packet for specific requirements and instructions on completing and submitting your proposal.

We request that you submit a letter of intent for preliminary review of your proposal concept at least one month prior to submitting the full proposal. Letters of intent are reviewed and feedback will be provided regarding the proposed research relevancy, objective and methodology. Letters of intent are accepted on an ongoing basis via e-mail to the foundation@asrt.org.

Selection Process

The ASRT Foundation Board of Trustees approve grant awards. The trustees have established a Research and Grants Advisory Panel of medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals to assist in evaluating grant proposals.

The following criteria are used to evaluate each proposal:
  • Significance/relevance to the profession
  • Qualification/resources of the principal investigator and associated personnel
  • Adequate demonstration of study protocols, assurances and agreements
  • Appropriateness of methodology/experimental design
  • Soundness of budget
  • Thoroughness of literature review

Distribution of Funds

Grant awards are disbursed to the affiliated institution after the completed grant agreement and release forms are received. A final report of expenditures must be submitted when the project is completed and any unused funds returned.
