Seed Grant Submission Guidelines

To ensure that your seed grant proposal has the best likelihood of receiving funding, submissions should adhere to the guidelines discussed below.

Proposal Components

Research proposals should be submitted as a Word document of no more than 10 double-spaced pages. Make sure you complete the Research Seed Grant Application and that your proposal includes a well-defined research question, a description of planned research activities, a literature review related to the topic of study, and an itemized budget accounting for the requested amount of funding up to $3,000.

Eligible Expenses

The proposal budget should include a detailed listing of expected expenses related to the research project. Funding may be used for the following expenses: release time (salary and benefits); postage, copying and similar project facilitation expenses; purchase of specific materials or equipment needed to undertake the proposed research project; travel to and from a research site; manuscript preparation and publication costs; reimbursement for human subjects; and payment for a statistician.

Ineligible Expenses

The following expenses are typically not supported: institutional overhead (indirect costs; travel to scientific meetings or symposia; educational programs, tuition, room and board; curriculum development; salaries or stipends for assistants, excluding statisticians; general computer equipment and software. If detailed budget justification is provided for a particular need for a specific item, an exception to this list may be made on a case by case basis.

Institutional Review Boards

If your research project involves the use of human subjects, animals, radioisotopes or biohazards, we must receive documentation of approval from the appropriate institutional review board(s) before an award can be funded.
